This method of disposal is commonplace in America with their vast number of oil-wells. In the U.K., this technique has been developed by Blackland Park who have held a waste licence since 1993.

Extensive research has been carried out by an independent geology company to determine the long term suitability and integrity of the oil reservoir.

The facility includes a working oil well producing high quality crude oil, which is despatched for local refinement. The extraction of oil produces a large percentage of highly contaminated water, which is re-injected back into the oil field using the disposal well, as is common oil production practice. The water is piped 1010 metres, down into the geological trap, the integrity of the pipeline being regulated by the Health and Safety Executive and the Department of Trade and Industry.

This same pipeline is also used for the injection of acceptable liquid wastes, which both meet the site requirements and fall within the remit of the site licence issued by the Environment Agency.

Any waste considered for this method of disposal must be subject to physical examination and detailed chemical analysis.

The well is ideally suited for wastes:-

• which may not be suitable for recovery or fuel blending
• deemed undesirable for landfill
• not acceptable for water treatment

• oils
• lubricants
• ammonia
• certain in-organic and organic acids
• detergents and surfactants
• solvents
• herbicides
• pesticides
• biocides
• aqueous wastes high in C.O.D.
